Leon McKenzie will have to switch his attention from putting a nail in his former club's Championship coffin to saving his club career.

Leon McKenzie will have to switch his attention from putting a nail in his former club's Championship coffin to saving his club career.

The 30-year-old would have been hoping to make an appearance for Coventry City at Carrow Road on Saturday, as Norwich City look to bid for the three points that could jolt their bid against relegation to League One into life.

However, McKenzie now faces nine months on the sidelines after rupturing his Achilles tendon during the second half of Saturday's 1-0 home win over promotion chasing Birmingham City.

The injury has ended McKenzie's season, and with his contract set to expire in the summer the striker faces an uncertain future.

“He's devastated; we're disappointed for him,” said Sky Blues boss Chris Coleman. “He worked so hard to get back last year after a thigh injury. But we'll look after him and get him back.

“He's unlucky as his Achilles has gone. He had another one this year on his opposite leg, he got back from that and now he's played Saturday and it's just one of those things.”

Norwich sold McKenzie to Coventry for £1m back in August 2006, and he has netted 14 times in 67 games for the Sky Blues - including the second goal in the Canaries 2-0 defeat at the Ricoh Arena on the opening day of the season.

But he has also struggled with injuries, both at Norwich and Coventry - where he was limited to 11 appearances last term.
