Paul McVeigh - an inspirational figure behind Norwich's recent revival in fortunes - could be out of Friday's night's televised clash against Burnley.

The Canaries midfielder - City's joint leading scorer this season - took some time to leave the pitch because of a back injury sustained just 10 minutes into the second half of the 2-1 home win over Sheffield United on Saturday.

The Northern Irishman - roundly booed by visiting Sheffield United fans because of his controversial goal celebrations in the Boxing Day win at Bramall Lane - received lengthy treatment on the edge of City's area but was unable to continue.

McVeigh suffered the injury while throwing himself in to make a block in his own penalty box, an interception which summed-up Norwich's second-half heroics as the promotion chasing Blades threw everything at the hosts.

But the consequences could be costly for City, who, manager Nigel Worthington admitted, knew they'd been in a battle against the Blades.

“He got a knock on the back which was very tender and very sore when it happened,” said Worthington.

“There are a lot of bumps and knocks, but we will get them ready to roll at the start of the week and go from there.”
