Championship side Charlton Athletic have joined the race to sign young Norwich City striker Adam Idah on loan for the remainder of the season.

That's according to the South London Press & Mercury, who report that the Addicks are eagerly awaiting City's decision on Idah's immediate future following this weekend's FA Cup tie at Burnley.

The 18-year-old became the Canaries' youngest ever hat-trick scorer earlier this month, during just his third senior appearance, starring in a 4-2 win over Championship side Preston in the third round of the FA Cup.

With senior strikers Teemu Pukki and Josip Drmic both injured the Republic of Ireland Under-21 star then started the following weekend's Premier League game at Manchester United, a 4-0 defeat with little opportunity to shine.

Idah hasn't been involved in the following two games however, with Pukki back and scoring two penalties in a 1-0 win over Bournemouth and a 2-1 defeat at Tottenham, with Switzerland international Drmic featuring as a substitute in both after two months out with a hamstring injury.

The Irishman had been expected to leave for a League One loan to step up his development this month, after two prolific seasons at academy and youth international levels.

Doncaster Rovers had been hopeful of signing the Canaries prospect but now it seems Charlton are keen as well, who currently sit 19th in the Championship six points clear of the relegation zone.

Speaking after his hat-trick at Preston, Idah told us of his loan prospects: "It's up in the air at the moment, I don't know what's happening. If I go on loan, I go on loan, it's going to help me in my development."

The youngster is expected to feature at Burnley in the FA Cup on Saturday, with Pukki potentially being rested but Drmic likely to be keen on making his first start of the season, having been signed on a free transfer from Borussia Monchengladbach last summer.

Charlton have recently been taken over by new owners, which has been followed by manager Lee Bowyer signing a new three-year contract this week, having led Athletic to promotion via the play-offs last season.

Former Norwich number one Andy Marshall is the goalkeeper coach at Charlton, who keeps an eye on his former club's progress as he has featured as a co-commentator on BBC Radio Norfolk in recent years.

The Cork native signed a new contract last summer, committing to City until 2023, and has scored once in six games at under-23 level as he has spent most of his time with the first team.

However, he scored 13 in 23 games at U23 level during 2018-19 and 15 in 23 matches for the U18s during his first season at the club, during which he helped City reach the quarter-finals of the FA Youth Cup, alongside players including Max Aarons.

Idah's hat-trick at Preston made him the youngest hat-trick scorer in the FA Cup, from the third round onwards, since 1957 - aged at 18 years and 328 days. He will celebrate his 19th birthday on February 11.
