Little blame for defeat to Hammers but City full-back still has lots to learn
As a disappointing Premier League season moves towards a close for Norwich City, our player watch assesses the development of left-back Jamal Lewis after the Canaries suffered a heavy loss to West Ham.
3 – Good control of a Tim Krul goal-kick, Onel Hernandez knocks the ball to Mario Vrancic as Lewis over-laps but Vrancic’s pass has too much on it.
6 – Starts an attack by finding Teemu Pukki and then charging forward, but Marco Stiepermann’s poor control concedes a throw.
12 - Mark Noble’s corner from the right is missed by Alex Tettey and Timm Klose so Lewis heads behind. Jarrod Bowen delivers the next corner from City’s left, a static Vrancic is easily beaten to the header by Issa Diop and Michail Antonio thumps into the roof of the net for 1-0, with Lewis making a late but unsuccessful dive to try and block the shot.
18 – Bowen stays strong to hold him off on halfway but then Lewis tracks his man inside and sticks with him centrally until the danger is over.
22 - Hammers defender Angelo Ogbonna’s clearance deflects all the way through to Antonio, who runs away from Klose and Bowen takes over with Lewis chasing, but Ben Godfrey is there with a strong block in the City box.
23 - Vrancic finds Emi Buendia, who frees Lewis in space on the left and the full-back picks out Pukki with his cross but the Finn nods his header wide of the near post.
27 - Godfrey with a lovely long pass to switch the ball to Lewis on the left, who controls on his chest and cuts inside Bowen, Stiepermann can only chest towards the edge of the box and Max Aarons accidently handles the ball.
30 - Cross from Aarons spirals up, Hernandez with a decent touch and Lewis drives a low cross back in but Hernandez fires his shot comfortably wide.
48 - A lovely long ball from Godfrey to the left and Lewis does really well to control and cross under pressure, but the ball is cleared.
49 - Wins a corner, after Pukki and Vrancic opt not to shoot. Buendia swings in and easy for Lukasz Fabianski to claim.
51 - Takes visiting right-back Ryan Fredericks out on the edge of City’s box after being beaten for pace. Noble squares the free-kick but Pukki blocks Declan Rice’s shot. Lewis maybe a little lucky not to get booked but didn’t know a lot about it, with Fredericks was steaming past him.
62 - Returns a pass to Buendia in space on the edge of the box, Rice with a good block and Vrancic can only head Aarons’ cross well wide, with the ball a bit behind him.
74 - Dragged out of position tracking Bowen but then Lukas Rupp brushed off the ball by over-lapping full-back Ryan Fredericks, whose low cross is prodded in by Antonio for 4-0, with Aarons and Godfrey left trailing in his wake.
80 - Tries to beat Bowen for pace but has to turn back and pass to Kenny McLean.
87 - Progresses down the left but hands over to Todd Cantwell, who blasts a wild shot high and wide.
88 - Some good feet from Josh Martin as he dances out of trouble but then Lewis throws his arms in the air in frustration as chipped pass from Martin is intercepted.
VERDICT: Didn’t do too much wrong and offered a decent attacking outlet in the first half at the least, but overall part of a fairly limp attempt at showing some pride in the circumstances.
Northern Ireland international has had his good moments but has also learned some harsh lessons during his first top-flight season, with Daniel Farke’s system perhaps allowing full-backs too much attacking freedom at times.
His final ball still needs work but would appear to offer a solid left-back option to any interested Premier League clubs who are willing to spend on him this summer, as he is still developing, but may benefit most from another season of learning his trade in the Championship.
