Daniel Farke admitted Norwich City’s shutout in a 1-0 Championship win over Birmingham City was the perfect response after shipping four goals at Millwall prior to the international break.
City had leaked the most goals in the second tier during a tough baptism for the German head coach but Nelson Oliveira’s close range tap in cashed in on a stout shift without the ball.
“I think 33pc of clean sheets. Two from six games,” joked Farke. “Yes, totally deserved. Our defence behaviour was really brilliant today. I can’t remember one clear chance for Birmingham. They had two free kicks outside the box but we didn’t give away any chances. We were very good on counter actions and missed some chances. When you don’t get the second one you use your nerves a little bit and in the last minutes when they use long balls or the pitch is wet everything can happen.
“You have to be careful and awake each and every second. It was a hard struggle but I am happy for the lads.”
Farke admitted his players had some making up to do to the supporters after the manner of their Millwall collapse.
“It is not easy for the supporters because there were some very poor mistakes in the defence,” he said. “To have that positive attitude is hard but they totally understand we have to stand together in times of a big change. Sometimes it is like a rollercoaster.
“If you would choose as a club or a coach you say, ‘no, we want to win each and every game and everything has to work from the first second.’ We can sell some important players, bring in young lads and then press a button and you are successful. The reality is different. It is important to have days like these when there is a togetherness on the pitch and off it. This was for the fans and I am happy for them.”
