Manager Chris Hughton said he had no regrets about the team he fielded against Luton Town after Norwich City crashed to their first FA Cup defeat by a non-league side since before he was born.
The Canaries were in Division Three South when they lost 4-2 at home to Bedford Town in 1956, but Saturday’s defeat by the Hatters was much more high-profile because of their Premier League status, with 85 places between the two clubs in the English football ladder.
Hughton made six changes against the Blue Square Premier side after the 5-0 defeat at Liverpool and only two of the starting eleven were his own signings – defender Javier Garrido and on-loan striker Harry Kane.
“Yes, I made changes but I made big changes in the previous round at Peterborough and the performance was very good,” said Hughton.
“If I didn’t feel the changes could have got us the win I would not have made those changes and I had a team out there that was good enough to win this football match.
“As manager of this football club I will always take responsibility. It’s an awful day for us. We haven’t been good enough as a team, there is no doubt.
“I pick the team, I have no regrets about the team I picked and I’m very capable of taking responsibility.”
City might have escaped with a replay had referee Andre Marriner awarded a penalty for a clear handball by Luton defender Lathaniel Rowe-Turner in stoppage time.
“What I was told is that it definitely hit his hand but I haven’t seen it again,” said Hughton, aware of the need to lift his squad over the next three days. We’re all hurting at the moment.
“The players know it’s a tough time and we expect all of the criticism that will come our way. It’s normal when you lose against a team everybody expects you to beat. We need to pick them up. Spurs is a big game for us and probably from where we are right at this moment, this game can’t come quickly enough.”
