Daniel Farke admitted Norwich City have pulled off a coup to recruit Tom Trybull after the German midfielder inspired the Canaries to a 3-1 League Cup third round win on Tuesday at Brentford.

Trybull was again impressive and set up Josh Murphy to seal the victory after Mario Vrancic’s earlier brace at Griffin Park.

The 24-year-old joined the club on a free transfer in the summer but has already emerged as a key figure at Carrow Road.

“I don’t want to praise him too much because maybe Chelsea or Manchester United get an idea or whatever,” said Farke. “To be fair, since he has joined the squad he had to work a lot on his conditioning but he improved from day to day and now from game to game. It was a brilliant performance. He was great in possession, he played finishing passes, he was really aggressive in each one on one duel. I am really happy he is in our squad.

“It was good for Mario as well. You could feel he was refreshed. I gave him a break at Sheffield because he had quite a heavy load and it was good for him. He seemed to be really focused and concentrated. His set pieces are a big strength. He was calm on the penalty and it was a brilliant free kick. His passing was also good. I am happy for him.”

Farke felt his side moved through the gears after Brentford missed a first half penalty.

“We wanted to go the next round and we knew it would be a hard task here at Brentford,” he said. “Playing away in the cup is always difficult against an opponent in your league, who were very aggressive and motivated. I think we had a brilliant performance and were concentrated and disciplined for 89 minutes at least. We deserved to go to the next round.

“It was a different game in comparison to Sheffield United. We knew Brentford were good in possession and we would have to control the ball. We had a good first 25 minutes. We felt it was just a question of time before we scored the second goal and after the penalty we conceded Brentford tried to invest a lot and we had to sit deeper. We were not brave enough to press them higher and we took the wrong decision in possession, on occasion. We spoke about this at half-time and we were brilliant in nearly all topics after the break, so we created chances out of our possession, down the centre and the wings, in counter actions and we defended really well.”
