Daniel Farke has urged Ben Godfrey to forget his difficult night at Stevenage, after the Norwich City youngster shed tears following his role in the two goals conceded during Tuesday’s 2-2 friendly draw.

Farke revealed the highly-rated teenager had to be consoled in the away dressing room after his square pass was punished for Stevenage’s opening goal, before later handling a deep cross that led to an equalising penalty.

Godfrey endured a tough night operating in a defensive three at the League Two club but Farke is determined to give his best prospects plenty of pre-season game-time.

“It is time to give the young guns some chances in pre-season. I don’t mind if there is a dip in the performance levels,” he said. “Ben you could say scored two own goals in the way we conceded them. He was sitting in the dressing room and crying a little bit so you have to talk with them and encourage them. This is the time to give them some chances. Of course he is not happy with the result, but it is not a problem for me. We have to work with the guys.”

Farke had his first real taste of the competitive edge to English football he can expect on a routine basis this coming season.

“Yes, it was a hard test. The opponent did really well. They were very aggressive,” he said. “We are not happy with the result but to be honest we don’t go too deep with the result. It was one of those friendlies with a lot of chances. In the first half we were pretty good on the counter. We defended well in the final third. We didn’t give away any chance until the goal we conceded. After the break we were a bit better in possession. I felt we dominated that area but we were not as effective on the counter.

“It was a needless penalty to concede. It was a game where the underdog creates a big performance and fights for his life. We didn’t have a big squad with us which means those on the pitch had to play many minutes. Perhaps too much for this moment of pre-season but it was a good, hard session for the guys. I am really happy with our working style and the results in the league through the season will be much more important.”
