Norwich City have made their first signing of deadline day - finally completing a deal for trial under-23 striker Pierre Fonkeu.
The 20-year-old Belgian scored for Matt Gill’s under-23 side during City’s pre-season tour of Germany, in a 2-1 win over SC Rot-Weiß Oberhausen.
Fonkeu had come through the youth system of Club Brugge and was recently linked with a host of English clubs, including Norwich, Stoke, Sunderland, Derby and Wolves.
“Pierre integrated really quickly into the group, and mainly that was down to his performances,” U23s boss Gill told City’s website. “He works really hard during sessions and he took that into games, and he’s a lovely lad to work with. He’s hungry to learn and get even better and that’s the type of character we want here.
“He’s very hard working for the team, quick, strong and a really unselfish striker. He chases lost causes and puts defenders under pressure.”
The young Canaries were in need of a striker, with Fonkeu having been ineligible for Premier League Two matches since pre-season, with Carlton Morris on loan at League One side Shrewsbury for the season.
With Benny Ashley-Seal seemingly turning down professional terms after going on trial at Leicester and Chelsea, that has left recent signing Tristan Abrahams as the main striker option.
However, the 18-year-old was supposed to be returning to National League side Leyton Orient on loan for the season, while training with City’s U23s.
Earlier on deadline day the Canaries announced the sale of academy youngster Agust Hlynsson to Brondby and loan deals until January for left-back Harry Toffolo, joining League One side Doncaster, and defender Michee Efete, heading to the National League with Torquay.
