On-loan Norwich City talent James Maddison has successfully had a yellow card for diving rescinded.

The attacking midfielder was booked by referee Kevin Clancy in the 68th minute of Aberdeen’s 3-1 win at Inverness Caledonian Thistle on Saturday.

The 19-year-old posted a short video on his Twitter account of the incident earlier this week, showing that Inverness centre-back Gary Warren kicked his right foot from under him as he slalomed into the penalty area during the Scottish Premiership clash.

The challenge was centimetres outside of the penalty box but instead of being awarded a free-kick – with Maddison having already shown his superb set-piece ability for the Dons – the former Coventry trainee was shown his second yellow card of the season.

Just two minutes later he thumped a free-kick against the post, before being substituted in the 75th minute, as Aberdeen saw out the win to stay second in the table behind Celtic.

“Can someone explain to me why I got booked for diving? Cuz I’m not quite convinced,” Maddison had said on his @Madders10 account.

However, Aberdeen have provided an update this afternoon, tweeting: “The club can confirm that the yellow card received by James Maddison against Inverness CT on Saturday has been rescinded.”

Simulation is the only yellow card offence that can be appealed under Scottish Football Association rules, although this is not the case in England.

Maddison has scored two goals and provided five assists in his nine Scottish Premiership appearances for the Dons this season and is due to return to Norwich in January.

We ran a poll earlier this week asking if Maddison had been unfairly treated, with 89pc of voters agreeing that the yellow card was unjust.
