A fair amount of time each summer is spent trying to get a heads up on exactly who City are looking to bring in.

The majority of fans love the transfer window and whilst some may protest, journalists aren’t any different… nothing quite beats the buzz of getting the heads up on a signing and getting it right.

The desk had heard a whisper that City had signed an attacking player in Spain and that they were “very excited about it”.

The player in question had apparently even had Premier League interest but they were to be disappointed as he had already signed a deal with Norwich City.

The Canaries were willing to take a chance on a player that only those who spend hours on Football Manager had heard of.

“Sometimes you get a moment and you have take it,” business and project director Zoe Ward explained when beating the likes of Tottenham and Liverpool to the signing of James Maddison.

“I hope we’re having a similar conversation about Emi Buendia.”

It’s fair to say there are a lot of conversations happening around Buendia recently with the Argentinian maestro rising to the challenge of City’s promotion quest.

His match-winner against Swansea was always going to take some beating but his all-round display against Hull on Wednesday night was breathtaking at times.

Fans will be talking about that touch in the build-up to his second of the evening in 30 years’ time. It was so good that Teemu Pukki’s back-heel that actually provided the assist barely got a mention.

There was some concern when Wes Hoolahan departed that supporters wouldn’t have a player that could provide the kind of moments that a Sunday League player can only dream of. There might be a few hamstring twinges this weekend if anyone tries Buendia’s flick.

But his recent form begs the question… how did a player like Emi Buendia end up at Norwich City?

The truth is because they were brave enough to take a chance on him.

Whilst City have made great strides in their recruitment, there were several other clubs well aware of the potential Buendia was showing on loan at Cultural y Deportiva Leonesa from Getafe.

But they couldn’t convince their sporting directors/managers/head coaches or whoever they answer to, to take the plunge.

City’s financial situation and losing the parachute payments means they’ve had to be imaginative in their recruitment.

The club struck gold with Maddison, his progress and subsequent sale tempered the loss of parachute payments and set up this promotion push.

Reach the Premier League and fans will be hopeful of holding on to their next prized asset in Buendia but if his form continues then the 22-year-old is going to be worth 10 times the £1.5m City reportedly parted with…and some.

But such talk can wait. For the moment at least supporters can revel in watching a player fulfilling his potential at Carrow Road.

If he keeps making memories like he did on Wednesday night then no-one will begrudge the player the opportunities that will inevitably come his way.
