‘I live for this, I dream for this’ - Striker craves success with City as he targets Euro 2020
Josip Drmic has a dream - to finally shine for Norwich City and claim a place in Switzerland’s squad for this summer’s European Championship.
The striker's career has been ravaged by injury during recent years but Drmic is finally fit and firing for City, scoring his third goal of the season at Tottenham in the FA Cup last week and pushing for a first Premier League start.
The 27-year-old has 10 goals and 32 caps at international level but only managed one brief appearance during Euro 2020 qualifying, with Vladimir Petokvic's squad drawn in Group A alongside Italy, Wales and Turkey ahead of the tournament.
'The coach, Petkovic, told me 'Jo, you have to play. If you don't play it will be very difficult',' Drmic explained.
'I think everybody already knows this and I know it too. I can just wish. It will be a big wish, a big dream if I can go to the Euros.
'Because the last Euros I didn't go because of an injury. It is a big goal and I will do everything so that I can go there and to play games for Switzerland.'
Drmic arrived on a free transfer from Borussia Monchengladbach last summer and has scored three goals in 16 appearances, returning from two months out with a hamstring injury in January.
After 120 minutes at Spurs, Teemu Pukki reclaimed the lone striker role at Sheffield United on Saturday but was joined up front by Drmic as Daniel Farke changed to a 4-4-2 diamond formation after half-time, with City trailing 1-0 and struggling to keep the Blades at bay.
However, his cumulative game time amounts to less than five full matches, largely only making brief cameos in the league, making his equaliser at Spurs last week a particularly meaningful moment - in front of 9,000 travelling Canaries supporters.
'It was an amazing feeling for me, at Tottenham, one of the biggest and nicest stadiums in England,' he reflected.
'It's always nice to be on this pitch and then to score in such an important game was incredible, a nice feeling, I can't really describe it.
'I live for this, I dream for this and those moments, I was just so happy.
'And also, after that, when the team won the penalties, it was just an explosion. You can see in the pictures, it was amazing.'
