We continue our look through the top 100 players in Norwich City’s appearance list, with Paddy Davitt looking at Bryan Thurlow’s contribution to the famous 1959 FA Cup run.

224 appearances/1 goal

A ’59 and a son of Norfolk. Bryan Thurlow ticks plenty of boxes in any discussion about the greats from Norwich City’s rich heritage.

Thurlow was an ever present for two seasons but his commitment to the club during an eight-year career was underlined with an additional 112 reserve team appearances for the attacking full-back. Born in Loddon in 1936, he played for his local side and Bungay Town before Norwich could see the potential and offered him professional terms in August 1954.

Thurlow was a key figure in the famous team of Terry Allcock, Ken Nethercott and Barry Butler who defied the odds as a third tier side to knock out mighty Manchester United en route to the last four of the FA Cup. Thurlow was denied a Wembley appearance in a semi-final replay against Luton Town, but was part of a promotion-winning side two years later. He made 224 senior appearances but scored just the once before spells at Bristol City and Lowestoft Town prior to retirement.
