Burnley defender is reportedly a target for Norwich City, as the former Middlesbrough centre-back looks to restart his Premier League career.
The 26-year-old was called up to senior England squads during 2017 but was an unused substitute in three games, having previously been capped 10 times at under-21 level.
That followed an impressive spell for hometown club Middlesbrough, although Gibson was unable to prevent relegation from the Premier League - when he played every minute of league action and often wore the captain's armband.
TeamTalk claim to have an exclusive insight into the defender's future, claiming Burnley are considering a loan, with Norwich and fellow top flight new boys Sheffield United and Aston Villa said to be interested, as well as Turkish club Besiktas.
Championship clubs Sheffield Wednesday and his former club Boro are also mentioned, although Gibson is said to be keen to avoid dropping down a level.
He joined Burnley last summer in a deal reportedly worth around £15million after Boro had been beaten in the play-offs but made just five appearances for the Clarets after a hernia injury ruined the first half of his season.
However, Gibson still has three years remaining on his contract and Lancs Live reported last week that he is not interested in leaving Burnley this summer and that he was training in Portugal with team-mates James Tarkowski and Aaron Lennon in Portugal ahead of pre-season.
VERDICT: Permanent deal would seem highly unlikely, having moved for £15m last summer, but a loan could well be of interest to City.
Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray has admitted Rovers are interested in a reunion with Grant Hanley, after a frustrating previous season for the Scot, which would open a vacancy - although it's understood the centre-back is keen to stay at Norwich.
However, Premier League clubs can only sign two players on domestic loan and winger Patrick Roberts has already been brought in from Manchester City for the new season.
Gibson clearly has plenty of ability but may well need a fresh start to get back on track after his injury problems, so would be looking for assurances of regular football.
While Ben Godfrey, Christoph Zimmermann and Timm Klose are expected to be front-line options following key roles in City's promotion, Godfrey and Zimmermann in particular are untested in the Premier League.
