Youssouf Mulumbu could line up against Norwich City on the opening weekend of the Championship season with the Cottagers set to snap up the free agent.

Mulumbu used his official Twitter account to retweet an African Football magazine’s claim the Cottagers are in pole position to land the experienced midfielder when his City contract expires on July 1.

The 30-year-old was one of seven senior players released by the Canaries at the end of last season, after a limited impact at Carrow Road in a two-year stint following his move from West Brom in June 2015.

Mulumbu made only 16 senior appearances for the club last season in a campaign disrupted by injury and a spell at the African Cup of Nations for DR Congo.

Fulham missed out in the Championship play-offs but under Slavisa Jokanovic would expect to be challenging again for promotion alongside the Canaries. Mulumbu’s experience at Craven Cottage could also be an asset with former England midfielder Scott Parker announcing his retirement from the game on Wednesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, another of the senior players released last month, Michael Turner, is being touted with Southend United.

The 33-year-old centre-back worked with Shrimpers’ chief Phil Brown at Hull City and is available on a free transfer. The Southend Echo reported on Thursday Turner is set to be part of Southend’s squad heading to Spain for a pre-season training camp as Brown weighs up whether to bring in the experienced former Sunderland man.

Turner made only three senior appearances for the Canaries last season after falling out of favour at Carrow Road. His last league appearance for Norwich came in February 2015.
