Wolves winger Ben Marshall is a target reportedly being pursued by Norwich City following the exits of Josh Murphy and Marley Watkins.

The 27-year-old former Stoke City academy prospect spent the second half of last season helping Millwall chase a play-off place while on loan.

Marshall scored three goals and set up another five during 16 games as Neil Harris’s side impressively finished eighth but Sun journalist Alan Nixon has said Norwich are rivalling Millwall for his permanent signing.

Nixon, who writes a transfer rumours column for the newspaper, posted on Twitter: “Norwich in hard for Ben Marshall, may beat Millwall.”

That follows the promotion of parent club Wolves, who are not expected to take the former Blackburn and Leicester wide man on their Premier League adventure.

The Salford-born former Manchester United and Crewe trainee was signed from Blackburn for around £2million in January 2017 and scored two goals in 16 games during his first six months at Molineux.

Just four starts during the first half of last season soon saw Marshall on his way to Millwall however, as Wolves splashed the cash on the way to their Championship title success.

With two years remaining on his contract the Canaries could well be in the market for a player with plenty of Championship experience, after selling two wide options last week.

Josh Murphy was sold to top-flight new boys Cardiff for a deal worth in excess of £10m and Marley Watkins, an unsuccessful free transfer from last summer, was sold to Bristol City for over £1m.

Emi Buendia has already been signed from Getafe for around £1.5m but another wide option, Yanic Wildschut, is also thought to be surplus to requirements under City head coach Daniel Farke – so Marshall’s addition could well fit into the summer plans of sporting director Stuart Webber.

With star man James Maddison also closing on a big-money move to Leicester the Canaries will have some money to spend, despite the financial pressure provided by the loss of parachute payments.
