City's leading scorer had seen a headed goal disallowed in the first half for offside, but he was a constant thorn in the side of an Oldham team who are stuck in the relegation zone and whose performance left home fans calling for the head of manager Dave Penney.

City boss Paul Lambert gave McNamee his second start of the week, with Korey Smith recalled to the centre of a 4-4-2 formation at the expense of Stephen Hughes.

It was a comfortable performance by City, although they did need goalkeeper Fraser Forster to pull off a superb save in a one-on-one with Keigan Parker late on before Smith cleared Reuben Hazell's header off the line.

City are five points ahead of Leeds, who have a game in hand, but were held to a 2-2 draw at local rivals Huddersfield on Saturday. Charlton are nine points behind City in third, while Colchester's 3-2 defeat at Bristol Rovers leaves them 10 points off the lead with a game in hand.
