Norwich City wide boy Sergi Canos has the talent to light up the Championship this season, according to Alex Neil.
City’s highly-rated summer signing from Liverpool made his debut in the 2-1 friendly win over Rubin Kazan that capped off the Canaries’ week-long tour of Austria.
Canos rejected the chance to stay on Merseyside and snubbed a host of other suitors to join Neil’s promotion crusade. Neil insists there is much more to come from the 19-year-old, who proved his worth last season in the second tier on-loan at Brentford.
“He is young, he will make mistakes but he definitely has talent,” said Neil. “Like the Murphys he can produce something unexpected. That will excite the fans and myself and the coaching staff. I think the season he had at Brentford was vitally important because until you do that there is always question marks about how effective he might be.
“There are a lot who play 21s and struggle to make that transition but he has done it really well and I think that gave us the confidence to secure his services.
“We have given him the opportunity now to show how good he is and can be. He is dynamic, he is direct, he can play wide, he can drift in off the line, he can play on the opposite side and at times last year he played as a number nine.”
Canos showed glimpses of that potential early on against the Russians in Austria.
“I thought he started the game really well and as the half wore on he didn’t finish it quite as well,” said Neil. “At the start he showed he could see a pass, he can dribble, he has good pace and he was hungry to get involved. It is just about how many times he can have an influence, how often we can get him involved.
“He is still young boy but has great scope. At the start of the game he drifted past three players in one movement, he has good feet and we didn’t see a lot of evidence in this game but take it from me he is quick.”
