A goal from Chris Martin shortly before the break was enough to give Paul Stevenson's side all three points in last night's Pontins Holidays Combination clash at Broadhall Way.

The goal from Martin takes his tally to eight in his last four outings for the Reserves.

It was the home side who had the first real attempt on goal when Ben Hunt forced Matthew Gilks into a save away to his right while at the other end, Luke Daley, who was an unused substitute for the home clash against Stoke City at Carrow Road 10 days ago, saw a header saved by the Stevenage keeper Clark Masters.

Robert Eagle was causing the Stevenage fullback all sorts of problems down the left flank, sending in a low cross that Martin headed just over the crossbar. Meanwhile down the right wing, Bally Smart saw a deflected shot saved by Masters, who then produced a superb one-handed save to deny Martin after some good work by Daley.

Martin scooped a Smart cross over from just two yards but made amends on 44 minutes after he started and finished a move when he collected an Eagle cross to slot the ball home.

A feature of the first half was the performance of Damon Lathrope in the centre of the park and he continued to do well after the break, heading a Rossi Jarvis cross just wide of the target.

Stevenage were never out of the running, however, and they came close to drawing level late in the game when City substitute Paul McLean was on hand to clear the ball off the line.
