Norwich City are set to sign Villarreal left-back Xavi Quintilla, according to reports in Spain.
The 23-year-old will join the Canaries initially on loan but that will become a permanent deal should City manage to get promoted back to the Premier League.
Barcelona based newspaper Sport is reporting that Villarreal boss Unai Emery has sanctioned the deal that will see the defender link up with City ‘in the coming days’, with a deal close to completion.
City have already rejected an offer for Jamal Lewis from Premier League champions Liverpool with new boy Sam McCallum and Philip Heise already options in that position.
Quintilla is reportedly a long-term target for the Canaries and was linked with a move to Carrow Road in January.
City are understood to be in the market for a left-back, with the club already fielding numerous loan enquiries for McCallum. They are also searching for additional options at centre-back, with Burnley defender Ben Gibson their preferred target.
The Spanish under-19 international has made 19 appearances for Villarreal this season, with his last arriving against Real Madrid last month. He has been predominantly a back-up option for Villarreal however, with former Liverpool left-back Alberto Moreno the preferred option in that position.
Quintilla was also a key part of the Barcelona U19 team which won the Uefa Youth League in 2014, a team which included current Wolverhampton Wanderers star Adama Traore, beating Benfica 3-0 in the final.
He moved to Villarreal in 2017 but was initially involved with the B team, making just nine first team appearances last season - although that did include playing all of a Europa League quarter-final, a 3-1 home loss to Valencia in the first leg.
Quintilla signed a contract extension under 2023 in February, but Emery isn’t believed to see the defender as a major part in his plans, meaning the club would consider offers for the left-back.
