But Norwich City fans had mixed emotions over the news Mick McCarthy is set to leave Ipswich Town at the end of the season - ranging from glee to dismay.

The Barnsley-born Irishman has been in charge of the Tractor Boys since 2012, avoiding relegation in his first season before famously losing the playoff semi-final in 2014 to the Canaries.

Many Norwich fans rejoiced in the schadenfreude of seeing McCarthy finally announce his departure from the Suffolk club on social media.

But others feared the worst.

Nigel Tams said: “Bad news for Norwich... They might get a decent manager now!”

On Twitter, Nigel Meek said: “Congratulations Agent McCarthy, your work there is done.”

Other Yellows fans were complimentary of McCarthy.

On the Pink Un Facebook page, Aaron Clarke made Ipswich favourites for the drop and said: “He’s seriously over achieved at Ipswich with what he’s got financially... It must be demoralizing when the players play in front of an empty stadium.”

Roger Martins was in agreement. He said: “Leaving aside usual rivalry, & idiotic views of some - I think he’s done a good job @ITFC - under very difficult circumstances; I respect him”, while Norwich City fan David Harris said: “He has more knowledge of English football than Farke and certainly has more passion than our leader.”

Also on facebook, Alex Ware said: “He loves a moan, but always thought he was doing a pretty alright job there, all things considered.”

Many City fans wondered who would replace McCarthy, with many deeming Ipswich a poisoned chalice for any manager coming in.

On Facebook, Matt Gibson said: “Who on earth would want to take over a debt ridden, Championship stuck club like Ipswich?”

Another fan, Matt Canning, said: “Whoever they appoint next, I doubt will get the results Mick has quickly. And I should think plenty of their fans will be concerned about where it may leave them next season.” and another, Mark Parsons, said: “Despite his foul mouth, he has done a tremendous job for them and he will be seriously missed. Omg they may now need to go for a cheap option like hiring a coach from a Bundesliga second team - now that would be desperate!”
