An excellent evening's work

It was pleasing to see a good number of supporters at the Capital Canaries' AGM and Fans Forum in Swiss Cottage on Monday night. But, as I witnessed the Norwich City board face some rather tough and testing questions, little did I know what was to be served up at near capacity Carrow Road twenty-four hours later.

City's energy, tempo and patience came together to make for an excellent evening's work on Tuesday. So good was some of the passing and movement in fact, that it was met with choruses of 'it's like watching Brazil' from the Barclay faithful; when was the last time you heard that? Crewe away in May 2004 if I'm not much mistaken; long enough anyway.

Messrs Shackell and Doherty orchestrated the defensive back four and anything that was directed Paul Gallacher's way was comfortably and confidently mopped up. At the other end of the pitch, the pace and craft of Hucks, Earnie and new-boy Lee Croft caused the uninspiring PNE problems all night. For a boy who is only 75% fit, Croft has already shown glimpses of real Premiership class in the couple of hours of football in his new Norwich shirt, and I'm encouraged by the early signs of link-up play from our attacking trio. As for our Dickson, it was a like the boy finally becoming man, awesome.

So finally we've turned that corner, the wheels are firmly back on and the promotion bandwagon is fit for service and on the road (forgive me, but football wouldn't be so without clichés).

Well, not quite, or at least not yet; after all, lest we forget Aristotle's immortal words: 'one swallow does not make a summer'. It's a start, and a remarkably good one, but the work is only just beginning. Whatever it might be that's changed over the short close season break, the early signs are undoubtedly promising, but this league is not getting any easier and the momentum must continue forward if we're to challenge for one of the play off spots or better this year.

But, the management and players have set a new benchmark: play with the kind of gusto and passion shown midweek, and wave farewell to the boos and jeers that emanated from the stands last term.

It was announced at the meeting on Monday that Capital Canaries has negotiated a new and improved return fare from Liverpool Street to Norwich; a bargain 9 quid! I'm hoping for a few more 'nine pounds well spent' in the coming weeks!
