He should have been here

The Man In The Stands

The dream comeback is off - Darren Huckerby's playing days are over.

The Man resents the terrible way Hucks was tossed aside by Glenn Roedent. Antoine Sibierski was probably treated to a better departure.

It still grates that the most influential player this club has had in years wasn't even allowed a proper send-off.

While the treatment of Hucks at the time was disgraceful, the decision to let him go was just about understandable. He wasn't having the effect on games he used too.

But in hindsight, it's obvious that if he'd stayed and been a part of last year's squad, even Hucks firing at 70pc would've been enough to see us clear of relegation.

I know it's not as though he's dead or anything, but it seems as good a time as any to reminisce over a true City legend.

The glorious goals; his hatred for Ip****; whether he was a better on the wing or up top; could he cross a ball; the silverware; the fat he felt - and feels - the same way about this club as we do.

Testamonials are a complete waste of time these days, but Hucks deserves a place back at City.

He'd be perfect for telling the Academy youngsters exactly what this club means to everyone.

And if they ended up caring half as much as he did, we'll be alright.

Ah, the enigma that is The Doc.

Not even he could've imagined his attempts at revenge for last season would see him fall from skipper to outcast before the end of September.

There must be something in that armband. Fozzy will agree.

The Doc has become a symbol of our decline - from being brought in for our top flight campaign, to being hapless during our Ewe-gate slaughter.

You always felt he was one decent centre-back partner away from being decent himself - which at this club meant he was at a serious disadvantage.

It's all very well Lambo making these big calls, but he'll have to bring the results with them to prove he's right.

OK, so we were rubbish against Walsall and retreated into a lead-lined shell at Franchise Dons on Monday - but the referees aren't doing us any favours.

I maintain we beat the Saddlers 1-0.

Then on Monday, even on a bad night it would've been a penalty apiece.

Quite how a referee can let his linesman overrule him without actually discussing the matter is beyond me.

You could bring in replays - but then you're relying on a referee having the humility to refer a decision. I'd love to know where they'll come from.

Employing two more 'linesmen' to sit behind the goals sounds like a great way to boost football's officiating economy in what must be difficult times, but soon we'll need committee meetings to make any decisions.

I propose a system based on 'ask the audience' in Who wants to be a millionaire, where every fan at the game has a keypad with two buttons - 'foul/goal' and 'no'.

That should at least sort out our home form.

It'll be a wonder if Leon McKenzie doesn't follow Hucks' lead.

Seriously, even I'm impressed how many injuries he's managed to pull out of the bag to avoid running out at Carra Rud again.

The Man is well aware Leon had “personal problems” that left him crying for a way out of the 'hell' that is playing in a yellow shirt.

However, there will always be a soft spot here for someone who sent us top of the league at Poorman's Road.

I can't say I'm looking forward to the Charlton gamey.

The depressing expectancy of midtable mediocrity from seasons in the Championship has somehow managed to follow us down to the depths.

Play-offs already look our best bet, so you'd really better cross those fingers.
