Johannes Hoff Thorup will stay on Jon Rowe’s case to turn him into a Championship force for Norwich City.
Rowe produced 14 goal contributions in 32 league appearances last season, and was on target in Tuesday’s 2-2 friendly against Hoffenheim.
But Thorup wants much more from the 21-year-old, after a breakout campaign that saw him shortlisted for the Football League’s young-player-of-the-season.
“I’m in his ear every day, because we need to get him to work harder,” he said. “And to understand that he simply needs to be more involved in the game and be more on the move, especially without the ball, where he needs to bring more intensity into the game.
“But what we saw (against Hoffenheim) is what he can do with the ball. And we saw what he can also do at a higher level than what we're used to. There's so much potential in that boy, we just have to release it and get it out there. There is a lot more to come and that is how it should be for a player of his age.
“What is obvious for us, clear and obvious, is that the potential is there. The high quality is there, we just need to make sure that he can produce that every game we play, and he can show that every game we play.
"The new season for him should not be a season where it's up and down and up and down. Which is fair sometimes for young players, but now is the next step with him where he can produce a high performance level almost every game. I think it's fair to expect that.”
Rowe sparked a comeback against the Bundesliga side after trailing 2-0 at the interval in the club’s penultimate friendly.
“In the good moments we played well. We looked a solid football team that could really take the control in the game and then of course also respect that there'll be moments against a good side where we have to defend,” said Thorup. “We were okay doing that, with details to be highlighted for the players where we need to be stronger.
"Giving the ball away in a critical manner for the first goal, where we are actually close to breaking through ourselves when we lose the ball and concede a goal should never happen. So details, of course for us to highlight to the players, but overall a performance good.”
