Norwich City squandered a huge opportunity to leave the Championship relegation zone with a 2-0 loss to Stoke at Carrow Road.
Postponements for Portsmouth and Oxford United meant a single point would have been enough to take them 21st in the second tier, but goals from Sam Gallagher and Sorba Thomas meant a sour ending to the festive period for the Canaries.
The coin toss rarely has any bearing on professional games, but it did in the context of a pitch that needed the help of a local journalist to de-ice pre-match. Despite the best efforts of their shovel and a host of kitmen and stewards, the snow remained on one side of Carrow Road.
That's why the luck of the draw meant exposing the home side early on, their failure to grasp the conditions giving Stoke a chance to press. When they did, they did effectively, but Harry Darling blocked Divin Mubama's low shot.
City then started to get a firmer grip on the game, fashioning their first opening with a swift passing move. The Barclay encouraged Josh Sargent to shoot when he got to the edge of the box, but instead he spotted Kellen Fisher darting forward. Unfortunately his finishing powers aren't quite as strong as the American's and he blazed over from a tight angle.
At the other end Stoke remained a threat, and Lamine Cisse was close to opening the scoring in the 17th minute. His strike was deflected after a poor clearance from Matej Jurasek, forcing Vladan Kovacevic to quickly change direction and hold it. The cost appeared to be great when play was stopped with the Serbian holding his fingers, but he continued upon the resumption.
The visitors' status as aggressors was also unchanged, the home crowd growing restless as possession was lost cheaply and frequently. Jacob Wright's failure to capitalise on a loose ball in the box angered them further, although Jurasek had shown some rare quality to earn it.
The same man was at it again shortly thereafter, whipping across for Jovon Makama at the back post before his header was comfortably held by Tommy Simkin. Jurasek then thought he'd opened the scoring in another breakthrough moment for his City career, but the offside flag denied him.
There was a pot shot from Cisse in the 34th minute, but Stoke's early promise was fairly remote by then. Norwich were the team in control going into half time, although their efforts until then were fruitless.
The second half begun with more of the same, but an increasingly degraded playing surface meant fluid passing football was even tougher than in the opening period. Perhaps some inspiration could be taken from Thursday's win on QPR's seemingly ploughed pitch, though it seemed to be lacking.
Philippe Clement's plan to find some involved substitutes, with Ben Chrisene and Oscar Schwartau introduced on the hour. The next chance fell for Mark Robins' men, however, Sorba Thomas the beneficiary of a defensive lapse. But he could only lob wide, leaving Kovacevic relieved.
In truth, many spectators would have felt similarly had the full-time whistle gone. Entertainment was at a premium, as it has been for much of this packed festive period. But they still had to watch Kovacevic drop a cross - another theme of the run - before Bosun Lawal blazed over with the goal gaping.
In front of the River End another of Clement's substitutions was involved, Emiliano Marcondes flicking over with his header shortly after replacing the anonymous Wright. That was to be City's final chance for a while, Stoke looking likelier to claim a battling win.
And with 15 minutes left, they got the goal they deserved. Thomas got the best of Fisher and crossed low, leaving an unmarked Gallagher to tap in from close range.
The previous 77 minutes of football suggested that City would struggle to equalise, and despite a few promising moments that proved to be the case. Instead Stoke sealed the three points, Thomas scoring a goal of his own from Million Manhoef's pinpoint centre.
Going into two weeks without Championship football, the sour taste left in the mouths of the Carrow Road faithful will be one of missed opportunity. The good feeling could return in part when Walsall travel to NR1 in the third round of the FA Cup, although many supporters will already have eyes on the trip to Wrexham in two weeks' time.
