David Wagner insists the injury absence of both Josh Sargent and now Ashley Barnes for the next two to three months must not derail Norwich City's bright start to the Championship season.

Wagner confirmed at Colney on Friday Barnes has suffered medial knee ligament damage in the second half of the midweek 2-0 home defeat to Leicester.

The experienced striker will not require surgery but is likely to be out until the other side of the November international break.

Fellow frontman Sargent is sidelined until the new year after undergoing ankle surgery in recent weeks.

This was Wagner's first public reaction on Friday morning at City's training ground.

"Ashley has a medial ligament knee injury. He does not need a surgery but we will miss him for a few weeks, I think, after the November international break is realistic that he is back for contention.

"Do I like it? Obviously not. It's anything but nice, but part of the game. To be without our two strikers who started a lot of games at the beginning of the season for the next couple of months, or even more, is not good but it is how it is. We have a squad together where I have a lot of trust and belief.

"Adam (Idah) made big steps in the last weeks. And he hopefully can keep progressing and performing and scoring goals. Obviously (Hwang) Ui-Jo is still learning the names of his new team mates. We signed him after Josh’s injury to back us up in this area. Now obviously he has to support and help maybe a little bit earlier than we thought because of Ashley's injury.

"But everything I've seen so far, his touches, his movements, his finishing, is very interesting. We have to work with him so he understands more about how we like to play, for sure, on his fitness as well, but we have players who can back us up in this area.

"Liam (Gibbs) who played there the other night, Nacho (Marcelino Nunez) who played there in this position as well. But it isn't nice. No question. We will deal with the situation, we will move on.

"We wish him all the best, both of them, that they come back as quickly as possible and obviously as strong as possible as well. There's still a lot of games to go when they are back. You also know over the course of a season other teams will have problems like this.

"Do I like and love the situation? No. Am I'm concerned about it? No. Aside from the players we have mentioned Gabby (Sara) can push one forward, because Forsy (Adam Forshaw) is now ready to go as well. So it is not perfect, because perfect is if you have all the players available, but we will deal with it.

"And we have options who can deal with this situation. They will try their best and we will push forward and move forward as well. It's up to the guys to show what they are capable of, if they get asked as a starter or as substitute, and they have done great so far."
