Marcelino Nunez is likely to feature for Chile in their upcoming international matches despite his prolonged period out with injury at Norwich City.

His international boss Eduardo Berrizo has offered an update on the fitness of the Canaries midfielder and is hoping to have him fully available for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Peru and Venezuela over the October break.

Nunez has been sidelined with an ankle injury sustained in the last international break and hasn't played a single minute for Norwich since returning from September's camp.

David Wagner confirmed on Saturday night that City would allow Nunez to join his international colleagues in the hope of giving him a psychological boost ahead of their Championship return against Leeds next weekend.

Berizzo was quizzed on Nunez' fitness ahead of Friday's game in Santiago, with the City man expected to feature, especially given the absence of Arturo Vidal.

“Marcelino is an option. He has already recovered. He just needed to take the field (at Norwich). He is a little lacking in football, but he adapts very quickly, he has a very particular dynamic and he does not need many games to be well,” Chile's boss said at his pre-match press conference.

“The idea is to repeat (our midfield plan). Not only because of what we did against Colombia, I think we played better that way. We must find the man to replace Arturo (Vidal).”

Nunez hasn't featured in a Championship game for Norwich since their 4-0 victory over Huddersfield in August.

He hasn't started a game for City in the league this season but did feature in the opening two rounds of the Carabao Cup in victories over QPR and Bristol City. Nunez hasn't been named in the matchday squad for Norwich for over a month.

Chile are hoping to get themselves back on track in their qualification for the World Cup after taking just one point in their opening two matches of the campaign.

Nunez featured in their 3-1 defeat over Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguay last month - the game where he sustained his ankle issue, before missing their goalless draw with Colombia.

The midfielder rejoined training with Norwich last week and should be fit enough to feature against Leeds at Carrow Road after the international hiatus.
