Hwang Ui-jo has vowed that his first Norwich City goal against Sunderland is just the start as he continues to adapt to English football.

The South Korean finished off a free-flowing counter attack in the Canaries’ 3-1 defeat at Sunderland to extend their concerning run of form to one win in nine matches in all competitions.

Hwang was a rare bright point in another underpar afternoon for David Wagner’s side – with pressure continuing to mount on the German’s position after a third defeat in a week.

Norwich have had to contend with injuries in their striking positions after losing both Josh Sargent and Ashley Barnes to knocks in the opening portion of the Championship campaign.

Hwang was signed as a replacement for Sargent but has lacked consistency since arriving at Carrow Road from Nottingham Forest on Deadline Day.

By his own admission, the 31-year-old has been adapting to English football having never played a minute for Forest despite signing for a reported £4million from Bordeaux in August 2022.

After a year of loan spells and uncertainty, Hwang is hoping to prove himself in English football with Norwich and, after a period of adaptation, is hoping his goal at Sunderland will be the catalyst for him to rediscover his goalscoring form.

“It felt really good. I have been waiting for my first goal for this club. It’s come late but it is just the start,” the South Korean said.

“I try to do my best to get more. I needed some time to get to know the club, the formation and my team-mates. Now I know everything – our way of playing and the coaching staff. It’s getting better.

“My team-mates and coaching staff are kind and really good people. I’m trying my best and I want to score more goals to help my team. English football is always tough in the Championship but the Premier League also.

“You have to get used to it and I need to find confidence.

“It is a really physical league with good quality. For me, it’s good to play games to get used to English football. I need some more goals and assists – I want to help the team to win. The most important thing is to win the game whether I score or not.”
