Christos Tzolis’ blistering form in Germany has proved David Wagner right but it is too soon to say if he has a long term Norwich City future.

The 21-year-old Greek international added another goal and two assists for Fortuna Dusseldorf in a 5-3 Bundesliga 2 win over Wagner’s old club Schalke at the weekend.

Tzolis now has 12 goal contributions in 14 appearances, since sealing a season long loan move which includes a buy option on a player under contract at Carrow Road until 2025.

New City sporting director Ben Knapper is believed to be keen to lower the age profile of Wagner’s squad over the coming transfer windows, but discussions on Tzolis’ next step must wait.

“This is too early, still too early,” said Wagner. “First and foremost, we hope he can stay healthy. And secondly to continue performing like he has done as an individual and as the team as well. He and they are in a great position.

"Maybe they can win promotion. Nothing is bigger for a player like this, and then when the season comes to an end, or maybe even after the season, we have to make a discussion about this, but not earlier.

“I’m very happy to see what Christos is doing because you can imagine that I was a little bit involved in the loan to Germany, where I always thought, ‘Okay, this is the right place, this is where I'm quite sure, and confident, that they can accelerate his career again,’ and obviously apart from the goal he scored he gave another two assists in this (Schalke) game.”

Tzolis himself has spoken recently about re-discovering his enjoyment for football, after failing to make the grade with the Canaries following a big-money arrival prior to the club's last failed Premier League tilt.

“This only shows that sometimes loans, especially for young players, can be exactly the right move to accelerate a career because these players have the talent, and this is why we signed them, but sometimes it is a different environment they need to show your quality,” said Wagner.

“Both have to come together to click and this is what now happened for him. Hopefully as I said he stays healthy and can continue what he's doing and, obviously, we follow him quite close, especially me because German football is something quite close on my radar.

“He has had not only a great start, he has a very good season so far with Dusseldorf, and they are a team who have performed on a very good level. They are fighting for promotion.”
