Josh Sargent is one of the best strikers that David Wagner has worked with - but the Norwich City boss has vowed there is still more to come from the American.

City's form has seen a major uplift since Sargent returned from an ankle ligament injury at the start of the year.

Sargent has netted eight goals in 11 matches upon his return and fired City back into the top-six race ahead of a tricky midweek trip to Middlesbrough.

There has been plenty of debate about where Sargent ranks among the pantheon of Norwich greats past and present. Wagner cannot engage in that particular talk, but thinks the 24-year-old is one of, if not the, best forward he has coached during his managerial career.

“I never get tired of talking about Josh Sargent, provided he is healthy. I need to think about all the strikers I have worked with, but for sure, he ranks in the top three," Wagner said. "Maybe he is the best one because he’s complete.

"I still think he is not on his top-level fitness-wise. He had this after the pre-season in the first five weeks of the season, but he is on the way to doing so. It will never change the fact that he is a complete striker with all the attributes that he has.

"We are very happy to have him and that he does what you ask your strikers to do, which is to put the ball in the back of the net.”

Norwich have been blessed with a plethora of top goal-getters in recent years, and Sargent has taken the mantle from Teemu Pukki, who left Carrow Road last summer.

Wagner's praise for the American international comes from his completeness as a forward, which is integral to the way City's boss wants his teams to play.

“What makes him complete is that he has the tactical awareness of the game, not just in ball possession but without ball possession as well," he said.

"He has the working attitude to do some hard yards for a striker as well if the opponent has the ball. This is something we can be very, very happy that we have strikers, especially Barnesy and Josh, who are open to this and know how important this is.

"If you have this in your team then it helps you to keep your defensive shape. If then, they can put the ball in the net, this makes it even better.”
