David Wagner is excited to see how Abu Kamara withstands the challenges he has prepared for him in pre-season at Norwich City after an impressive loan spell at Portsmouth.

Kamara has enjoyed a fruitful loan at the League One champions, playing consistently and producing 21 goal contributions in 51 appearances in all competitions in his first full year in senior football.

Norwich are now hoping to reap the benefits of Kamara's spell at Fratton Park as attentions begin to turn to next season.

The Canaries are hoping to secure promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs, but want to assess Kamara upon his return to Norfolk this summer, regardless of division.

Despite calls from Pompey supporters for the club to move to sign Kamara on a permanent basis, Wagner is relishing linking up with the young forward again in pre-season.

"I haven't seen him for a year, okay in clips and on TV, but not in person," Wagner said. "A year can make a lot with a young professional.

"I'm excited to see how he responds to what we have in place for him [for pre-season]."

Wagner handed Kamara his senior debut for Norwich last season and rates the winger highly, prompting him to agree to a loan deal in order to expose him to regular minutes away from Carrow Road.

Kamara's loan spell on the south coast hasn't been plain sailing, but that is something that adds to the success of it for the City boss.

"I rate Abu as a player and a character. I think everyone knows this is why I gave him his first minutes in the Championship here in the last season," the City boss told the Pink Un.

"The special thing for me is that now everyone speaks about his numbers and promotion, but he had a difficult spell at the beginning and went through it. Not everything has been easy or happened quickly.

"He really had to improve, take information on board and settle into a new environment. As a young lad, you can easily break down in this situation but he stood up, fought and I'm very happy that he got his rewards and Portsmouth Football Club as well."
