The choreography of the early stages points towards a summer of change for Norwich City - and as such, plenty of plate spinning for sporting director Ben Knapper.

He has had six months to construct plans and formulate ideas, but bumps in the road will inevitably and invariably lay ahead.

The calendar is yet to tick into June and already the rumour mill has begun to swirl - Josh Sargent has been linked with Leeds, who are yet to even reach the Premier League, and now Gabriel Sara is reportedly in the sights of Serie A side Roma.

Given the conclusion of parachute payments and the financial reality that creates, Norwich will need to sell this summer. That is a cushion softened by Mark Attanasio's group, but player trading will be at the top of Knapper's agenda following an appointment of head coach.

Knapper wants a younger profile of the squad and a different playing style. That will mean alterations to the squad and, of course, cash.

Without deep pockets, Norwich will need to shift talent to help fund a rebuild. Sara, winger Jon Rowe and Sargent are prime candidates but goalkeeper Angus Gunn also cannot be discounted.

Norwich have welcomed interest from elsewhere in previous windows. It has been a constant part of their strategy to sell talent - James Maddison, Emi Buendia, Jamal Lewis and Andrew Omobamidele immediately spring to mind.

Some of those are down to financial necessity, others have been an acceptance that those players need or deserve a move up the pyramid. As Norwich attempt to open a fresh page, getting back to selling key players will become a pivotal component.

Some players will be more eager to depart than others. Some will hold ambitions of playing higher, while others will desire a fresh challenge or change of scenery.

The strength of performances of Sara, Sargent and Rowe will naturally attract interest. Gunn has a chance to attract further admirers with the European Championship on the horizon.

But the footballing economy isn't as strong as in previous windows. Clubs are fearful about financial fair play punishments, with several top-flight clubs having undergone investigation, suffered points deductions, or fear doing so.

With belts tighter and Norwich requiring to sell, there is a dance to be done. How do clubs reach the valuation that City have for their players, and can they afford not to cash in on them during the next couple of months?

Knapper will have to spin that particular plate among the several others that come with the hiring of a new head coach, changing the squad and implementing a new-found culture.

Those plans will be multifaceted depending on the levels of income, ranging from several sales to none whatsoever. That has its own impact on the level of business that Norwich can do themselves.

But, the more sales, the more change, the more alterations, the bigger the challenge and the more time required to turn the course of the ship. Norwich fans will remember the transitional season of 2017-18 under Daniel Farke and Stuart Webber after a hectic summer that started with seven players being released.

Knapper did need to rip up the foundations. Norwich do need to change. As a sporting entity, they have lost all sense of self. Wagner did a good job at offering stability, but in the end felt like a supply teacher managing a class rather than trying to progress it.

Then there is the wider challenge of altering the age profile of the squad. Norwich have seven players on their books over 30. Contractually, five of those are entering their final 12 months, but finding takers could prove challenging.

There may be some quick wins in terms of finance building - Adam Idah has embraced a loan spell at Celtic and will be keen on a return. Christos Tzolis, who is on loan with an option to buy at Fortuna Dusseldorf, will be subject to plenty of interest.

But those fees themselves are unlikely to be significant enough to fund widespread change, if that is what Knapper wants. It will take further sales.

It illustrates the size and scale of the task Knapper has on his hands. The season may have concluded, but the hive of activity has intensified. The final whistle at Elland Road was the end - for Wagner, for plenty of that squad - but it marks the beginning of a new dawn.

That will involve departures, incomings and natural growing pains. But it offers excitement to City supporters, even if may require time to develop into green shoots.
