Arturo Lupoli saluted his new striking partner after they joined forces to secure Norwich City's first win of the season.

The Canaries' Franco-Italian attacking combination worked like a charm as Lupoli and debutant Antoine Sibierski each scored in Saturday's 2-1 Championship victory at Plymouth.

It was City's first away success since February - a fitting reward for nearly 600 travelling fans on their longest trip of the season.

On-loan Lupoli's opening goal after 15 minutes was set up by a header from the 34-year-old Frenchman, who drilled home the second from a free-kick after 58 minutes, by which time Lupoli had been substituted.

But the 21-year-old Italian, on a season-long loan from Fiorentina, said he already felt the two of them had developed a good understanding.

“It's a great feeling,” said Lupoli. “I think we have a lot of quality that mixed together could be great because he can head the ball for me, he's a technical player and he sees a lot of my movement as well. It was his first game but it was like I'd been playing with him already for 10 or 20 games. It's good and hopefully will get better.

“It was his header for my goal and then he tried to look for my run two or three other times. He's an experienced player, so you always play well when you play with this kind of player.”

After adding to his two goals in the 2-2 draw at Cardiff three weeks earlier, Lupoli is now hoping to open his Carrow Road account in the home game against Queen's Park Rangers on Wednesday night.

He might have scored again at Home Park but had another first-half goal disallowed for offside and struck the crossbar with a second-half volley.

He said: “It's absolutely great for the team to get their first win, especially away. We knew it was going to be a difficult game against Plymouth, but we created so many chances we could have won by much more.

“But at the end all that counts is three points and we are very happy.

“I hit the crossbar and had a goal disallowed. I honestly think I was behind, two or three yards onside, but I have to see the replay. Pattison had two that hit the crossbar and Sibi had a few chances, Jamie Cureton as well, so it could have been a lot more. But even 8-1 only gets you three points so we are very happy for this and looking forward to Wednesday to trying to get the first win at home.

“We didn't do that against Blackpool and Birmingham but we played some great football, especially against Birmingham, so if we play like this and create the same chances, I think this time we will take all three points.

“As long as you create chances the goals will come. I'm very hungry for goals because last season I didn't score and this season I want to get back to my kind of season. For the moment I've scored three but it's still a long season to go.”

Manager Glenn Roeder said he replaced Lupoli early in the second half not because of a knock, but because he tended to tire after an hour - and to protect him from a second yellow card.

He said: “Arturo took his goal really well and he could have had a couple more. He's disappointed that the follow-up was offside. Then he went round the 'keeper and took it a little bit too wide.

“I think at the moment he's staying very strong for 60 minutes. He runs himself into the ground and his fitness levels are lasting 60 minutes at the pace we need him to. I was concerned he was getting frustrated that he wasn't getting any fouls off the referee. He was on a card and I didn't want him to do anything stupid.

“He's a young lad, so I had Cureton sitting there and didn't want to take a chance.”

Lupoli confirmed: “The manager told me I got booked in the first half for a silly challenge and he didn't want to risk anything so that's why I went off.”
