Craig Bellamy is available for his Championship homecoming this weekend despite being arrested by police investigating an alleged assault in Cardiff city centre.

The 31-year-old former Norwich City star was bailed pending further inquiries after being taken into custody following an incident in the early hours of last Sunday morning on Caroline Street. South Wales police said two men, aged 20 and 26, had sustained facial injuries which did not require hospital treatment at the time.

Police have not named Bellamy, currently on loan at his home city club from Manchester City, but released a statement confirming a 31-year-old man had been arrested. Cardiff later said the striker would be in the squad for the game at Carrow Road on Saturday (3pm) but declined to comment further on the matter.

Police were unable to confirm the date Bellamy has been bailed until, but he had been expected to return to Dave Jones’ squad for the league game at Carrow Road after missing last weekend’s FA Cup draw against Stoke. Bellamy’s season-long loan switch from Eastlands was widely seen as the Championship coup of the summer but the Welshman’s move has been marred by a persistent knee condition which has restricted him to 15 appearances.

The Cardiff-born player scored on his Bluebirds debut in the 4-0 home league win against Doncaster in late August and needs just one more goal to reach 150 in club football since making his professional debut with Norwich back in 1997.
