King's Lynn 2, Worksop 1

Good things come to those who wait - even if Lynn cut it fine at The Walks.

Keith Webb's men were a handful of seconds from featuring in today's FA Cup third round qualifying draw as an either or.

But the merest of flicks from master poacher Danny Bloomfield deep into stoppage time settled the tie.

Bloomfield diverted Michael Frew's prod after his initial close range header had cannoned back off Steve Hernandez's right hand upright.

It needed post-match confirmation from the officials to confirm Bloomfield had indeed applied the decisive touch.

Worksop protested long and loud in the midst of euphoric scenes on the terraces. Defender Kevin Dawson was shown a second yellow card for his appeals to the assistant referee who had flagged to award the goal.

The Tigers' were adamant the whole ball had not crossed the line. They were wrong. Geoff Hurst and Russian linesman it wasn't.

Bloomfield has previous this season. Droylsden. Home. Another close range stoppage time finish salvaging a Blue Square North draw.

Right place. Right time. A knack no coach in the world can teach. Drop him anywhere inside the parameters of an opposition penalty box and you can guarantee he will find the quickest route to goal. Blindfolded.

Bloomfield has it. Dick Everitt definitely had it. The octogenarian plundered more than 290 goals in post-war spells for both clubs. Warm applause rang around The Walks as he was presented to each set of players prior to kick off.

One can only wonder what he made of Lynn's profligacy between Joe Francis' opening header and Bloomfield's late winner.

Francis blinked first in his duel with Hernandez when Julian Joachim picked out the unmarked wideman minutes after breaking the deadlock.

The Tigers' keeper almost fell apologetically on Scott Mitchell's tame second half strike after the Rushden loan recruit galloped free into the area.

Lynn by that stage were looking to clear their heads after an early sucker punch on the restart - Kirk Jackson swivelling onto Paul Stansfield's initial shot to bury underneath Scott Howie.

"All you can do as a manager is pull your hair out," said Webb. "Defensively it's a bad goal to concede and it gave them the impetus and confidence to start coming at us. I think I said the right things. I think Lee (Glover) said the right things at the break but all of sudden, boom, and you find yourself in that position.

"We knew then it was going to be hard work. It didn't matter who the opposition were. We are our own worst enemy. We're in the hat - that is the main thing and hopefully we can look forward to a home draw. A lot of clubs would like to be in our position.

"Maybe we had a bit of luck with how it finished although I felt we deserved to win. It mightn't go for us next time so you take it when it comes because you know it'll even itself out."

Webb was only too aware the struggling Unibond Premier outfit should have been left playing for little more than pride in those final minutes.

"We just couldn't get that second goal which has been the story of my tenure here at King's Lynn," he said. "If we get the second it's over and done with. We try to walk the ball in at times. I'd rather the keeper save it then we try to beat one too many and give the defender a chance to get back.

"I thought the winner was an own goal but I don't honestly know. I saw the ball come back off the post, it seemed to hit their player and the next thing I remember was their lad kicking it after it had crossed the line. What I do know is the assistant gave it so we'll take that.

"But I was looking for a reaction after the previous game and I got it. Maybe when they equalised you could see the confidence had taken a bit of a knock but we still went on and created plenty of chances. And the way it finished the lads are buzzing, as you can imagine."

Webb confirmed second half arrival Frew had been left out of the starting
