Farke was predictably asked for his reaction to Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder’s post-match comments at the weekend over the Canaries’ perceived gamesmanship and poor time-keeping.

The German continued to adopt a diplomatic tone but refuted any suggestion his side had been guilty of time-wasting at Bramall Lane. Farke also confirmed Grant Hanley is cup-tied for the trip to Griffin Park after playing for former club Newcastle United earlier in the competition.

Russell Martin, who featured in Sunday’s development game at Carrow Road, is ruled out on health grounds after taking a course of injections for his nutritional requirements. Steven Naismith is another absentee with an abductor problem but James Maddison has been passed fit after suffering a gashed foot injury in Saturday’s 1-0 Championship win.

“Naismith has got a knock on an abductor muscle and couldn’t train, so he will have to do without him,” said Farke. “Russell Martin had to have injections after playing for the under-23s on Sunday so he needs a break for three or four days, which is a shame as we would have had him in the squad tomorrow.

“Tettey and Trybull were brilliant in the last three games, especially Alex because of his age and having some problems with his knees. It’s important we think about resting him, and also our wingers who have had to run a lot.

“But we won’t change 11 players, and we have to find a good balance. I have many good players on the bench and in the squad, and whoever plays will give everything for the Club and the squad.”

There was also an injury update on Nelson Oliveira, who is out of action after suffering a groin injury.

“I hope Nelson can be back towards the end of next week,” said Farke. “But it’s too soon for Bristol City for him. But I hope we can have him as soon as possible.”

City have kept clean sheets in three consecutive games for the first time in almost five years and are looking to continue the momentum building under Farke.

The Canaries have beaten two lower league teams at home in the competition so far, League Two side Swindon 3-2 in the first round and League One promotion hopefuls Charlton 4-1 in the second.

Brentford are yet to win in the Championship this season, sitting third from bottom with four draws from eight games. The Bees won 3-1 at League One side AFC Wimbledon in the first round before a derby success in the second, winning 4-1 at QPR.
