Norwich City assistant manager Ian Butterworth has resigned, the club confirmed this afternoon.
Having joined as Bryan Gunn's number two in February 2009, the former City captain oversaw the Canaries' 1-1 draw at Exeter and Tuesday night's disappointing 2-1 loss at Brentford following Gunn's sacking on Friday.
Paul Lambert's appointment as Norwich's new boss on Tuesday morning, plus the imminent arrival of Ian Culverhouse and Gary Karsa, looked set to put an end to Butterworth's stay - ironically with his post set to be taken by one of his former City team-mates in Culverhouse.
“Obviously things haven't worked out during my time here in difficult circumstances and I obviously felt the new coaching team wouldn't want me hanging about,” Butterworth told the club's official website. “Therefore I have taken the decision that it is right for all parties for me to move on.
“I'm obviously hugely disappointed it hasn't worked out but I would like to wish everybody at Norwich City every success in the future - hopefully the boys can quickly find their feet and start getting improved results.”
