Academy talent Josh Martin is determined to show head coach Daniel Farke that he can be trusted at senior level, after signing a new contract ahead of the Premier League’s resumption on June 17.

The 18-year-old has committed until 2023 after a breakthrough season in the youth ranks which earned him a place on the bench with the first team in January, during a 2-1 win at Burnley in the FA Cup fourth round.

Martin explained: “To be mentally focused, to show that he can trust me off the ball, to work for the team and to be a game-changer. I think they’re the main things for me, so that he can trust me and that I can make the difference in the final third, if we’re losing or drawing, that I can give that to him. That’s what I want to maximise the most.”

Martin demonstrated his attacking prowess with a Carrow Road hat-trick in the FA Youth Cup in December, during a hot streak which saw him score three goals in five games for the under-23s.

“Around that time is when I had my first training session with the first team and the boss said I impressed and he liked me, so kept bringing me back,” the winger continued. “I was playing 23s games and then training (with the first team) the next day, so it was a tough period but it was a period where I learned so much.

“What I think I did well in that period was that I stayed focused, I didn’t moan that I needed a break or anything, I just kept going and going. I think that’s what the boss likes, he likes a good mentality and that’s what I tried to do, to have the best mentality I could.”

When City confirmed the deal, Farke said Martin is “a very brave player with that special bit of creativity that you can’t learn”.

The proud youngster said with a smile: “I read that as well and it made me smile because he’s never said that to me! But to have someone like that think that of you is a real confidence booster. It feels really good.”

The Premier League looks likely to follow Germany’s lead in allowing nine substitutes to be named and five to be brought on, boosting Martin’s chances of a debut further.

Of that prospect, he added: “I just need to train really hard, prove to the boss that he can trust me and hopefully I can be involved in some of the games by the end of the season – that’s the plan.”
