Daniel Farke is an East Anglian derby winner but Norwich City’s head coach is backing his boys to achieve ‘something extraordinary’ this season.

James Maddison’s sublime second half winner sunk Ipswich to maintain the Canaries’ grip on this duel since 2009 and catapulted them into the Championship’s top six for the first time this campaign.

“There will be setbacks, it is normal in football, but I know as long as these lads stand together we are able to create something extraordinary,” said Farke. “We really have this feeling that to beat Ipswich is something special. This is a special situation. We all appreciate that.

“The game was full of passion and emotion. You are looking for that as a manager as much as the fans.

“It was a sweet feeling. Sometimes it is easy to win 5-0 but to win 1-0 after such a fight feels sweeter. It says a lot about their character and mentality to win five away in a row. To do that, with just one goal difference each time and a lot of clean sheets shows our attitude.”

Farke admitted City had to ride their luck at times before penning another Portman Road chapter in the Canaries’ recent derby dominance.

The Blues struck a post early on before the unmarked David McGoldrick planted a header over from six yards.

“It is so complicated to play Ipswich because they play the long balls and then for the second balls they get men around the ball quickly,” said Farke. “You have to accept this style of football and be prepared for the deep play. It is important to win the second ball. In the first half I had this feeling we were a little bit too nervous in our own possession. We were copying their style a bit too much.

“We spoke about this at half-time, about being braver in possession and playing our own game. Get the ball on the ground and a good structure. We did that better in the second half.”
