Jamal Lewis has made no secret of his dream to play at the highest level – but Norwich City will play hardball this summer after Liverpool were touted with a £10m raid.

The club’s sporting director, Stuart Webber, mapped out the Canaries’ transfer policy following Premier League relegation, with none of their prized assets available for anything less than £20m.

That remains the case, despite widespread reports Lewis is in the sights of the Premier League champions to provide competition for Scottish international Andy Robertson - with fresh claims in the north-west on Wednesday night the Reds value Lewis at an initial £8m, plus £2m in add ons.

City have had no formal approach from the Merseysiders in the wake of suggestions Lewis had cut short a holiday, with prospective negotiations already under way.

The Northern Ireland international is under contract at Carrow Road until 2023, and City have no pressure to sell this summer - even allowing for a projected £12m hit due to the impact of football’s coronavirus shutdown last season.

Lewis was the first of Norwich’s development talent to be fast-tracked by Daniel Farke, upon the German’s arrival in 2017, and the 22-year-old had been first choice for club and country until losing his place to Sam Byram.

The former Luton Town youngster reclaimed his starting spot after Byram’s season-ending injury, and during ‘Project Restart’ outlined his longer term career ambitions during a wide-ranging interview in the Belfast Telegraph.

“Everyone personally wants to get to the highest level they can,” he said. “But I would love to play Champions League and I feel like definitely within a couple of years I’ll be at a quality where I’m able to do that.

“I’ve got a taste of the Premier League this year and I want to play in this league week in, week out for the rest of my career.

“Everyone has their individual goals that they set and those are a few of mine. I intend to hit them.”

City recruited Sam McCallum from Coventry City, ahead of the upcoming campaign, with the 19-year-old an option at left-back or further forward down the left.

Norwich have also been credited with an interest in Liverpool’s teenage full-back Yasser Larouci, who is reportedly ready to leave Merseyside in search of regular first team football.

The 19-year-old had previously been linked with newly-promoted Leeds United.
