Jordan Hugill would love to become a cult hero in the number nine shirt at Norwich City – after revealing he grew up watching Grant Holt.

The City legend and triple former player of the year was a talismanic striker at Carrow Road in an era that brought a double promotion to the Premier League.

Hugill wants to get back to the top flight as soon as possible, after his move from West Ham, and knows the weight of expectation on his shoulders from a shirt worn by Holt, Dion Dublin, Iwan Roberts and Chris Sutton.

“I knew about that when I took the number, and I grew up watching Grant Holt play,” he said. “I would like to think I could be a fan favourite, but that is up to them to decide, not me. For me personally, I will just be myself because it has got me to where I am today so I am not going to change for anything. If people like me, they like me. If they don’t they don’t.

“I have always got a lot of haters, as people might say these days, but they are entitled to their own opinions. I would like to think I am a good personality. I like to have a laugh and a joke around, but ultimately I am hard working and I am honest and I promise to give everything for those fans.”

Hugill has already set himself a goal target after opening his account on his pre-season debut in the 2-0 German tour win over Dynamo Dresden.

“Last season at QPR showed me and everybody else I am a double figure striker. So I have to improve on that every season,” he said. “I got 15 goals in total. For me, now, my aim is to beat 15 goals, regardless of whether I am starting or not starting games.

“I am always striving to beat what I did. The ultimate competition is always with yourself.

“One of the reasons I signed is because for me this is a Premier League squad. If we can keep as many as we can it puts us in the best possible position. Essentially this is the team that got them out of the Championship.

“It is a great squad full of talent.

“I am sure I have played against a lot of these boys in the past but I am a different person on the pitch to off it.

“They might have had different opinions of me before I came.

“You are different when you cross that white line.

“Probably the only one I knew was Sam Byram from West Ham. I was with him for a year and a bit. I am good friends with him.”
