Norwich City goalkeeper Remi Matthews looks likely to remain on loan with League One side Plymouth Argyle as emergency cover.

The Pilgrims signed the 23-year-old on Friday on a short-term deal due to injuries to their three senior keepers and he was straight into action on Saturday, keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 win at AFC Wimbledon.

Under EFL rules Plymouth will now have to reapply for the emergency loan every seven days, with proof that their goalkeepers are still injured.

“I don’t see any speed in any of three goalkeepers coming back,” Argyle manager Derek Adams explained. “(Robert) Te Loeke and (Kyle) Letheren are long-term. Luke McCormick is looking like a long-term one as well.”

He added: “Remi was excellent. He has got very good hands, is a good kicker of the ball, talks and is composed.”

The win brought to an end a dreadful run of 14 matches without a win in all competitions for Plymouth but they remain bottom of League One ahead of a home game with 17th-placed Rochdale on Saturday.

Adams had watched Gorleston-born Matthews in action in last year’s Scottish Premiership relegation play win over Dundee United, keeping two clean sheets in a 1-0 aggregate victory for Accies.

“I watched Remi in the play-off final with Hamilton so I knew what I was going to get,” Adams continued. “I was very impressed with him that day and I’m delighted to get him on board.”

Plymouth are the fourth club Matthews has played for on loan, following League One spells with Burton and Doncaster previously. He is yet to play a senior game for City but recently extended his contract until 2019, with the club retaining the option for a further year.

“I’m very grateful to Norwich City,” Adams said, speaking to the Plymouth Herald. “Remi wants to come and play football and the circumstances we have had, with no fit pro goalkeepers, has allowed him to get that move.

“He has obviously been training with Norwich, and does communicate very well with the back four. He put in a good performance.”
