Fit-again Norwich City legend Wes Hoolahan is gearing up for his own fight at the wrong end of the table with Newcastle Jets.

Hoolahan suffered an ankle injury in September that put his A-League debut on hold after heading Down Under last summer.

The struggling Jets earlier on Thursday unveiled former Canaries' midfielder Carl Robinson as a new head coach, and the Irishman aims to play a big part in the fightback at the bottom club.

The 37-year-old's former club face a major survival scrap to stay in the Premier League, while the Jets face second-bottom rivals Central Coast Mariners this Sunday, although Hoolahan does not expect to feature.

"The Mariners match is maybe a bit too soon, I'm just going to see how it (the ankle) is," said man who spent a decade at Carrow Road before his departure in 2018. "I've been training with the boys but it's different when it's a game.

"You really need to be at 100pc. At the moment I'm at 85-90pc. Over the next few weeks I'll be working with the physios and getting myself fitter."

Hoolahan trained with Cambridge United after ending a spell with West Brom, but opted to prolong his career the other side of the world. Hoolahan believes he still has what it takes to pep up a Jets' squad which has notched just 13 goals in 15 A-League games this season.

"We create a lot of chances, we're just not taking them," said Hoolahan, in quotes carried by Australia's Associated Press. "We had 24 shots on goal the other night (against Western United) and we didn't manage to score one.

"It's not the attacking side of it that's letting us down, it's just the end product, these slight moments. Hopefully I can bring some composure to the team.

"You know, when you're in that situation to shoot, to take a touch maybe. "Obviously with my experience playing in the Premier League and the Championship over in England, hopefully I can bring that to the team."

Ex-City midfielder Robinson has signed a three-and-a-half year deal to move to Australia from Canada.

"Everything I have seen about the club so far has been top class, they are desperate for success and hopefully, we can achieve that together," he said, speaking to his new club's official site. "The opportunity was too good to turn down. I am really looking forward to finalising my coaching staff, rolling our sleeves up and getting to work.

"I am moving my family from a beautiful city in Vancouver to another amazing part of the world.

"The city of Newcastle is a city on the up, and myself and my family are looking forward to joining the community and playing a huge part in the continued growth of football in this area."
