Max Aarons was quick to allay fears he is the latest Norwich City injury casualty after suffering an ankle scare in a man of the match display for England’s Under-21s on Monday night against Kosovo’s Under-21s.

Aarons was superb in a 2-0 win for Aidy Boothroyd's side in their latest European Championship U21 qualifying win at Hull City but was forced to hobble off in the second half following a goal-saving block.

The 19-year-old initially appeared to have damaged his knee and needed to be helped down the tunnel. The full back left the stadium with his left leg in a protective boot and on crutches.

Aarons, however, insisted that was a precautionary measure before he is fully assessed by the Canaries' medical staff on his return to Norwich.

The likes of Christoph Zimmermann, Timm Klose, Onel Hernandez and Tom Trybull are already ruled out for Manchester City's Premier League visit in an injury-hit start to the new season for Daniel Farke's squad.

"It is just precautionary. I have the crutches out as well but let's see in the morning," he said, after appearing in the mix zone to receive his man of the match award from two-goal hero Phil Foden. "Hopefully nothing too serious.

"I thought initially when I made the tackle it was my left knee and there was a lot of pain but by the time I got back to the changing room and then had a shower it felt a lot better.

"The physios have had a look and it is the left ankle area so that is why I have got the boot on.

"I was delighted with my performance. To do this at international level was something I really wanted to do. The main thing was the result and to get the win. Now to be here with six points after two qualifiers that is all you can ask for.

"This has come around really quickly for me. Two tough games for England on top of playing in the Premier League for Norwich. It is a step up but you have to work towards this and that is why I am enjoying it."

Boothroyd hailed the youngster's display with club mates Ben Godfrey and Todd Cantwell also featuring for the Young Lions.

"He was outstanding," said the Young Lions' coach. "It is a shame that he got himself an injury because he was brilliant going forward, bags of energy, taking two people on at a time and producing some fantastic crosses.

"Hopefully it is not too bad and we can get him back playing for Norwich soon.

Aarons is unfazed about the prospect of coming up against the likes of Raheem Sterling at Carrow Road this weekend if he gets the all-clear.

"It has been a tough start but we can only stick to our plans.

"We know how tough it will be," he said. "You want to test yourself against the best players and to be doing that at highest level against the best in the world is what it is all about.

"Raheem Sterling has been brilliant this season and scored a lot of goals but it is about us.

"For me personally I want to qualify for the Euros with England at this level and for Norwich to play as many games as I can and hopefully help the side to stay up. I really believe we will."
