Peterborough United chief Darragh MacAnthony revealed he passed up a chance to sign Norwich City defender Sean Raggett.

The 25-year-old centre back sealed a season-long loan move to League One rivals Portsmouth earlier in the week, but Posh also held discussions with the Canaries.

Raggett was an option for the London Road club if a deal for Colchester defender Frankie Kent had fallen through.

The City ace has now moved to the south-coast, in a quest for regular football, after two ankle injuries curtailed a similar loan stint at Rotherham last season.

"To be fair his wages were realistic," tweeted MacAnthony, on the Posh owner's prolific social media account, in response to a question how much Raggett will cost Pompey. "We had an option to sign him permanently late last week when the Kent deal was in danger.

"I like him a lot, the lack of game time because of a previous injury was a worry, but when he is fully-fit one of the top centre backs in League One for sure this season."

City have been busy over the summer in that area of Daniel Farke's squad. Marcel Franke moved to Hannover 96 for an undisclosed fee while both Timm Klose and Ben Godfrey agreed new deals. Grant Hanley has also been touted with a possible switch to his former club Blackburn, but Raggett was the next to leave ahead of the Canaries' Premier League bow.

The former Lincoln City powerhouse is out of contract in 12 months, although there is a further one year option, and Raggett knows he needs to impress with Kenny Jackett's club.

"This is a big season for me and the aim is to get Pompey back in the Championship. It's a tough league and it's where we want to be," he said, speaking to Portsmouth's official site. "It's been a really good few years for me and now I'm here, I'm really excited to get going.

"I've always been confident in my ability and it was my aim to work my way up the leagues, although it was perhaps surprising that it happened so quickly.

"Going to Norwich was a big jump and it's definitely improved me, even if I haven't played many games for them.

"Nobody's got any right to play in the team, so I'm here to work hard and win my shirt. Hopefully I can do that."
