Norwich City sporting director Stuart Webber is not interested in flogging the family silver in next month’s January transfer window.

City’s top brass reiterated at Wednesday’s annual meeting with shareholders Webber and head coach Daniel Farke are not under pressure to sell.

Webber expects a quiet New Year’s trading but the stark financial reality at Carrow Road means the likes of James Maddison, Alex Pritchard or Nelson Oliveira all have a price.

“It is good we don’t have a gun to our heads. At the same time if there is an opportunity to be creative we have to look at it,” he said. “What if we get an offer we can’t turn down? Everyone has seen the figures now.

“If it’s not this window it will be other windows in terms of players having to leave and certainly if we want to bring anyone in, in January.

“We have an open mind, we are awake, but it is nice not to have the pressure of having to sell a Maddison or Oliveira or Pritchard.

“We don’t see it being a busy window. We always said it could take three, four, five transfer windows.

“If there is an opportunity we think is right in January and it involves trading we will address it. There is no money. That is no secret.

“My gut feeling is that won’t happen.

“It is a better window to sell rather than buy and we can’t predict right now a desperate buyer who is maybe trying to stay in the Premier League or looking to get into it.

“Crazy things happen in January. We won’t be doing anything crazy and if you look at the figures we can’t.

“We made a lot of changes in the summer and we have to give that time to breathe, whether it’s young players or lads who have come in from a different country. I think they will get better as the season goes on, not worse.”

“I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. You read some of the stuff beforehand and you expect rotten apples to be thrown at us,” he said. “I thought there were some fair questions and good points.

“These are people who have supported the club for 50 or 60 years in some cases and we have a duty to be honest with them. I would rather people went away thinking, ‘they were honest’ rather than ‘they tried to duck the questions’. It is important people understand the conditions we are working under.

“Would we have wanted to sell Jonny Howson or Jacob Murphy? Of course not.

“No club in the world would want to sell two of their best players but myself and Steve (Stone) and Daniel have our eyes open and we are working hard every day to make right what has gone wrong before.

“The easiest thing is for Daniel to say he wants a new striker or defender in January but he knows the parameters.”
