Cambridge United plan a charm offensive to convince Wes Hoolahan to sign up for a tilt at League Two.

The former Norwich City stalwart is poised to link up with U's head coach Colin Calderwood at the start of pre-season, as he weighs up whether to extend his playing career.

Head of football Ben Strang, who was in charge of the Canaries' academy recruitment prior to moving to the Abbey Stadium, admits enticing Hoolahan is a major coup.

"It's not a trial for him. It is probably a trial for us," he said, speaking to the U's official site. "We have made an offer to Wes earlier in the summer. Obviously Colin knows him from his time together at Norwich so he came in to meet us and we had a positive conversation.

"We hope he is keen to stay and play another year and if that is the case then, geographically, this could be a good place for him. He said ultimately he would like to come in and get a feel for the place and that is absolutely fine with us.

"Hopefully, as Colin alluded to, we can motivate him and encourage him a year here would be an exciting project for him but we are also mindful that he has spent only one of the past 12 seasons outside the top two divisions in England.

"He is a player with a massive calibre and a player who should not be achievable for a League Two club but the circumstances are there - he is available and he has worked with Colin before - which means we could be in with a chance and we hope that is the case.

"Colin has spoken about bringing in players who have played higher and have that standards and experience.

"Just for our young players, who have not played higher than League Two but have aspirations to go higher, it is great to be able to learn from him. If it is only two weeks then so be it."
