Norwich City suffered a second consecutive Premier League defeat in a 2-0 loss at West Ham on Saturday.

Sebastien Haller and Andriy Yarmolenko struck in either half for Manuel Pellegrini's side, who would have ran out even more comfortable winners but for Tim Krul's late defiance.

City may feel a sense of grievance Haller escaped a red card for an ugly first half lunge on Christoph Zimmermann minutes before he opened the scoring in a challenge that saw the returning captain later hobble off.

Zimmermann replaced Grant Hanley, who missed out with a groin injury for the German's first Premier League appearance of his career.

Josip Drmic and Alex Tettey returned to the matchday squad after being absent for the midweek League Cup exit at Crawley. Ibrahim Amadou was also included among the substitutes following his eye-catching cup debut for the visitors, clad in their all grey kit.

Teemu Pukki and Tim Krul both made their 50th appearances for the club while former Norwich City midfielder Robert Snodgrass was on the bench for the Hammers.

Todd Cantwell was hauled down by Mark Noble for an early free kick, but Zimmermann's far post header from Emi Buendia's delivery dropped to Lukasz Fabianski.

Cantwell surged through two covering West Ham defenders but played the pass when Pukki had just checked his run.

The youngster was involved in a nervy moment at the other end in the 13th minute when Yarmolenko tumbled after clipping his legs. Referee Tierney immediately pointed to the corner flag and there was no intervention from the video assistant referee (VAR). Television replays appeared to back up the official, with Yarmolenko tumbling after he had initially kept his feet chopping inside the Dereham man.

Zimmermann thwarted Felipe Anderson with a superb near post sliding block after Cantwell's sloppy intended pass to the overlapping Max Aarons was intercepted.

The City captain was then crudely wiped out by a late lunge from Haller the referee clearly did not see, given the lack of disciplinary action, and there was more punishment to follow three minutes later when the striker who once looked around Colney during Alex Neil's tenure grabbed his third of the Premier League season.

Arthur Masuaku burst between Aarons and the hobbling Zimmermann to guide a low cross finished by the Frenchman inside the six yard box.

Cantwell remained close to the action with a hooked effort over the bar in the aftermath of City falling behind, and then an attempt at the far post to head home Aarons' drilled cross that was just too high for his England Under-21 colleague.

Marco Stiepermann worked a pocket of space to test Fabianski, who was firmly behind his 20 yard hit.

After another threatening West Ham counter petered out Zimmermann signalled to the pitch he was unable to continue. The German hobbled off still clearly troubled by the after effects of Haller's earlier challenge to be replaced by Amadou.

Godfrey took over the armband alongside Amadou in a repeat of the centre back pairing that finished the cup tie at Crawley.

Farke opted to retain the line up that finished the opening period. City carved out the first real chance when Cantwell smashed a rising angled strike against the underside of the bar but the assistant had already correctly flagged for offside.

Yarmolenko's half-volley struck the post at the other end as West Ham moved through the gears again. The Ukrainian would not be denied, however, and lashed home a volley in the 56th minute that rebounded to him from Buendia's attempted clearance seven yards out on the angle.

The well-policed Pukki got his first sighter in the 67th minute with a low shot that lacked the power test Fabianski.

Buendia headed Issa Diop's header off his own line in the 69th minute after the Hammers' centre back rose powerfully above Stiepermann.

Snodgrass was introduced for the final quarter in place of Yarmolenko and picked up a yellow for hauling back Jamal Lewis.

The Northern Irish international whipped an inviting ball across the six yard box in the 76th minute but there was a distinct lack of grey shirts.

Farke made a double change in the 77th minute with Kenny McLean and Drmic replacing Cantwell and Stiepermann respectively.

Krul superbly thwarted the unmarked Manuel Lanzini two minutes later with a one-handed tip over before a double smothering stop from Anderson and then Haller.

The Dutchman then kicked away Snodgrass' low strike with the Hammers' now toying with City in the closing stages.

Drmic could have pulled one back in stoppage time but he stabbed McLean's cross into the ground and beyond the near post.
