Todd Cantwell has been spending his time during the current suspension of the football season calling elderly Norwich City supporters affected by the coronavirus outbreak.
City’s academy graduate spent Monday at the club’s training ground connecting with a number of older supporters who have been affected by the isolation methods advised by the government to protect them from the outbreak.
The 22-year-old has been holding conversations over the phone to connect with supporters who may find themselves alone during the current pandemic.
Cantwell was also involved in a Fifa tournament on Monday to help raise money for charity and to aid EFL clubs struggling with cash flow problems during the hiatus in the season.
Cantwell explained why he wanted to help the older generation of City supporters.
“You’ve got to keep yourself busy,” he said.
“Something I’ve been doing with the club is calling some of the season ticket holders who are over-80 and I’ve been having some conversations with them and touching base which I think is important.
“These are very difficult times, especially for the older generation, who this horrible infection seems to be targeting.
“It’s been refreshing for them to hear me talking to them and interacting with them a little bit and just have a general conservation to check that they’re okay and I think it’s fantastic that this is something the club have decided we can do to interact.
“Fifa is great with all the amazing technology for the younger generations but with the older generation a phone call goes a long way, I think.”
Over 6,000 of the Canaries season ticket holders at Carrow Road are over 60, and find themselves in the vulnerable category of those potentially affected by this illness.
The governing bodies of English football announced a complete shutdown on footballing activity until April 30 last week.
“Everyone is doing their best to limit the spread and it’s important people respect what is being asked of them. Football is a big thing but as long as we respect the guidelines, then hopefully we can shut this down soon and normality resumes.”
