Luke Chadwick is willing to adopt a roving commission if it means the chance of regular first-team football with Norwich City.

Chadwick scored the first goal of the Canaries' pre-season schedule in the 2-1 defeat at Exeter, playing the first 45 minutes principally on the left flank, usually patrolled by Darren Huckerby.

When he arrived on loan from Stoke last season, prior to completing a £200,000 move in the January transfer window, it seemed likely he would provide competition for Lee Croft in the right-wing position.

But both players started Saturday's match at St James' Park, on opposite flanks, and Chadwick said he had more than one string to his bow.

He said: “When I was at Manchester United I used to play on the left every time I played, really, so it's fine. I'll play either right, left or just behind the striker. It's up to the manager. I'll just be working hard and hope to be in the team.

“It's great to be back, great to have a game. It was a bit rusty after the long break but we got a good workout out of it.

“It was great to get in there and nick a goal so hopefully there will be plenty more where that came from.”

Chadwick will be hoping for another piece of the action in tonight's friendly against Lowestoft at Crown Meadow (7.45pm) or tomorrow's game against King's Lynn at The Walks (7.45pm).

The 26-year-old Chadwick failed to play 90 minutes for City last season. He was out of action for four months after an eventful debut at Ipswich in November, giving the Canaries the lead before being stretchered off after colliding with an advertising hoarding. He needed a knee operation on a bad gash and did not return until March, but after three brief appearances as a substitute, he was ruled out for the rest of the season with a thigh strain.

He said: “I've settled in great with all the players but football wise it's been terrible. I played one game and that was it. I'm back fit now. I've worked really hard over the summer and while I was injured to get myself right so now it's time to really come through and show what I can do.

“If we ease into it with the local games this week, we've then got a trip to Holland, where we'll be working very hard. Then we come back to the big two against West Ham and Vitesse Arnhem. After that, we'll be on for Preston and firing on all cylinders.

“With the squad we've got, we've got a great chance of being in contention at the end of the season. Last season we were a bit threadbare but there are a lot of players, so hopefully that will bring out the best in everyone.”
